About WaterSpec Lab
WaterSpec Lab is an independent water-treatment reference operated by ACB Investment LLC in Pleasant View, Utah. It exists to answer one question well: given your water test results, which treatment system do you need and what size. Every number on the site traces to a public source you can check.
What this is
An independent reference for people trying to work out which water treatment system they need. Not a store, and not a manufacturer.
The core of the site is a decision tool: you enter what your water test says — hardness, iron, pH, TDS, flow rate — and it returns a system class and a sizing figure, with the arithmetic shown. If you disagree with a step, you can see which step and check it yourself.
Why we built it this way
The facts that decide which water system someone needs are already public. EPA Consumer Confidence Reports publish measured contaminant levels for every community water system in the country. USGS publishes hardness by region. NSF and ANSI publish what each certification standard actually covers. Manufacturers publish flow rates and grain capacities.
The information is not secret. It is scattered, inconsistently formatted, and almost never assembled into an answer. So most people researching a $1,800 purchase end up reading marketing copy from the company selling the thing.
The method
Every factual claim on this site is entered into a structured register before it can appear in prose — with its source, the exact passage it came from, the date it was captured, and a date it must be re-checked.
The register is enforced by the build. A page citing a claim that is missing, unverified, or past its review date will not compile. That constraint is deliberate: it means the rule cannot quietly lapse when there is a deadline.
We also publish what each recommendation will not fix. Every page has a section for it. A softener does not remove iron. A carbon filter does not soften water. Salt-free conditioners do not soften water at all, whatever the listing says. Those limits are usually the most useful thing on the page.
Who runs it
WaterSpec Lab is operated by ACB Investment LLC, 952 Willowbrook Ln, Pleasant View, UT 84404. The founder is Andrew Bates, who is responsible for what is published here.
We are a new and small operation. We would rather say that plainly than imply a history we do not have. What we offer instead of tenure is a method you can audit: sourced claims, shown arithmetic, published limits, and a corrections process with a 48-hour turnaround.
